Radio Georgetown was licensed by the Federal Communications Commission on October 9, 1997 as a Traveler's Information Station.  The official call sign of the station is WPKY 886.

Traveler's Information Stations or TIS are designed to offer special, important, information to motorists as they travel into a geographic area.  The station was assigned call letters and an operating power of 10 watts on a frequency of 1.610 MHz.  The licensee of record is the City of Georgetown. 

The studio, transmitter and antenna are located at the headquarters of the Georgetown City Fire Department and broadcast messages are maintained by department personnel.

To augment the station's performance, a fully functional stereo studio is supported by digital recording equipment.  The station also monitors the Emergency Alert System (formerly the Emergency Broadcast System) for weather warnings and watches originating from the National Weather Service Office in Wilmington, North Carolina.  When watches or warnings are issued, they are instantly and automatically broadcast directly over 
Radio Georgetown.
