advantage of running down to a base store for a tube of toothpaste or a pack of chewing gum. When we heard that, several firefighters started talking about what we could do to help and we came up with what we do best, sharing.”
Fire Department Lieutenant Shane Singletary is a Sergeant with the Georgetown Guard. After a quick call to the Family Readiness Coordinator, Audra Harmon, to offer assistance, members of the department started “Share with a Soldier” and began collecting items for the soldiers.
Chief Joey Tanner said, “This is an easy thing for anyone to do. When you buy yourself something a soldier could use, just buy another and drop it off at the Fire Station or any of our drop off points.”
Johnson said the first shipment went out with equipment and materials from the armory January 5th. He said they had collected nearly 4000 snacks, cookies and nutrition bars donated by local Keebler Distributor Joe Lawrimore. “Anything that won’t perish during shipping is eligible,” Johnson said, “toiletries, snacks, personal items, reading materials, writing materials, the sky is the limit.”
A more detailed list of items is available along with additional information and a list of drop off locations on the department’s web site at www.georgetowncityfire.org/soldier/index.htm. Current drop off locations include both Georgetown City Fire Stations on Prince and South Island Road, City Hall on Dozier street and Georgetown Kraft Credit Union at Borne and Kaminski streets.
Tanner said the department is already working on shipment number two which is slated to go out to the Guardsmen in February. |
