Georgetown City Fire officials announced today a massive campaign to recruit volunteer firefighters. “We’re looking for anyone who wants to be a part of a team to help the community,” said City Fire Chief Joey Tanner.
Volunteers will be trained just like full time firefighters. Basic structural fire fighting, basic first aid and CPR are the staples of the firefighter’s training and skill. “This is not a job for the faint hearted.” Tanner said, “You’ll be trained to go into burning buildings, wear heavy, hot, bunker coats and pants, use heavy equipment and deal with bleeding injuries, broken bones and seriously ill patients. It’s not an easy job. But for the right person, it’s incredibly rewarding.”
In return, volunteers who complete the training will receive personal protective equipment, a uniform, participation in the department’s supplemental retirement program, a $ 3,000.00 tax deduction from S.C. income taxes and incentives from the S. C. Firefighters Association.
Volunteer firefighters may be employed on a part time basis to fill in minimum staffing gaps of the full time force. When vacancies occur in the full time force of the department, volunteer firefighters are given first consideration for full time employment.
Our Volunteer firefighters are required to obtain 150 initial hours of training and maintain a minimum of 20 hours of training per month.
Anyone interested in volunteering should submit an application available on line at http://www.georgetowncityfire.org/jobopening/cityapp.pdf or at the department’s headquarters station at 1405 Prince Street.
An organizational meeting of new volunteers will be held at 6:00 PM on October 8, 2009. At that meeting, interested individuals will receive an overview of what will be required to complete the training and become a firefighter.
