Tropical Storm and Hurricane Tracking |
|
Using computer technology and the latest advancements in weather modeling software, the Department is capable of tracking tropical storm systems throughout the Atlantic, Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.
Our software, from PC Weather Products, allows us to use the data of the National Hurricane Center to accurately pin point the location of any storm in NHC’s database. The computer interprets NHC’s data and applies it to local conditions so City Administration and the Mayor’s Office has the best information available to make local decisions.
The software enables us to automatically alert City Staff whenever there are changes to a storm system that would effect South Carolina and Georgetown.
In addition to the tracking software, the Department uses various resources on the internet to watch the progress of a storm system. Visible and water vapor satellite images are very useful in determining the strength and direction of a storm and potential ridges and troughs that a storm system may encounter.
The Department makes many of these resources available to the public from our Weather Center. The National Weather Service, NOAA, NASA and a number of other important weather resources have links directly from our weather page. |
