May 17, 2006 - Seventeen year veteran Michael Morris became the department's fourth Battalion Chief in ceremonies today. Morris will fill the position vacated by retiring Battalion Chief Lorenza Cobb last month.
Morris began his career in the department in 1989 rising through the ranks to his last position as Fire Marshal. In making the presentation Chief Joseph K. Tanner noted Michael's leadership and dedication saying he will be missed in the Fire Prevention Bureau. Tanner added, "as Battalion Chief the buck stops with you. You have full authority to act on my behalf in making decisions on shift and the fire ground."
Morris competed for the position with other officers in a three day assessment center. The department reorganized line officers several years ago creating Battalion Chief's for the first time in the department's history. Michael is the fourth to be named since the reorganization.
