For Immediate Release September 9, 2005
(Georgetown) - Tower 17, the department's first aerial truck, left Georgetown today for six months worth of repairs at E One in Ocala, Florida. The truck sustained more than $ 500,000 dollars in damage on May 14th while working at a massive fire at Screen Tight, Inc., just South of Georgetown.
During the fire, burning PVC pellets released massive amounts of corrosive materials that reacted with the exposed metals of the truck, including the aluminum ladder.
Repairs to the truck will include restoration of the ladder, installation of new working components and the body with an evaluation of the drive train. All of the repairs are covered by the City's insurance program.
While Tower 17 is out of service the department will depend on mutual aid services from neighboring departments. The department plans to purchase a used ladder truck in a few weeks.
Also damaged during the fire was Engine Company 11. Similar repairs are planned for that truck as well.
Tower 17 was first used by the department during an early morning fire on August 5th, 1999 after being delivered in July of that year.
