This picture was taken from the platform of a Baker AerialScope that was being demonstrated for the department in the late 1980's. At the top of the picture is the last car Fire Chief Odell Avant drove as Fire Chief before retiring in 1991. A 1988 Ford Crown Victoria, the car was topped by Chief Avant's favorite red 4 rotator light. Eventually the vehicle was passed down through several administrative officers and later donated to the Winyah Rescue Squad. Next to it was then Engine 7, a 1981 Century Series American LaFrance. Engine 7's primary responsibility was backup to Engine 3 in the City and lead truck for a contract area outside of the City. In 1994 She was renamed Engine 20 and retired in 1999. The truck was accidentally sold for scrap in 2001. The center pumper is a 1972 Ford Jaco, Engine 5. Originally the second due pumper from Station 1, Engine 5 became the first pumper housed in the department's substation when it opened in 1981. Retired from service in the mid 1990's Engine 5 currently serves the Johnsonville Training Center where it still operates today. The picture at the bottom of this page is another view of Engine 5 pictured in front of Station 1 after being placed in reserve status The white pumper, Engine 3, was a 1976 Mack. At the time it was the Captain's truck and designated lead pumper for most of Georgetown's City Limits. For many years only senior engineers mastered Engine 3's difficult, manual, transmission and it was a distinct honor to be named its driver, even if only as a replacement engineer for a single shift. It was refurbished in 1992 and retired in 1995. Engine 3, renamed Engine 12 was sold in 1999. The center picture is Engine 6. A 1962 Ford American LaFrance with a cable shift 500 gpm pump. Retired in 1980 after the department received its first Emergency One custom pumper, Engine 6 was eventually used in a training session with vehicle extrication equipment. She was sold for scrap in 2001. The position and identical spouts for oil and radiator coolant made her famous with fire fighters who would pour oil in the radiator and water in the crankcase.
