Chief Odell Avant, Fire Chief for the Georgetown City Fire Department from December 1971 until June 1990, passed away Friday October 17, 2008.
The men and women of the Georgetown City Fire Department are deeply saddened by his passing and offer our deepest condolences to Chief Avant’s Family.
Chief Avant laid in state in the rotunda of City Hall Monday October 20, 2008 from Noon to 5:00 O’clock PM.
The family by visitation of family and friends in the Chambers of City Council Monday October 20, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 O’clock PM.
Chief Avant’s funeral was Tuesday October 21, 2008 at 2:00 O’clock PM at the Church of God on the corner of Highmarket and Washington Streets. He was escorted by the department’s Honor Guard to Pennyroyal Gardens on Engine 12, the last Fire Engine purchased under his command. The procession included a fire truck from every department in the County and a number of units from Horry County.
A Maltese Cross wreath was placed at the grave by the men and women of the Georgetown City Fire Department. Chief Joey Tanner presented Mrs. Avant with the Chief’s Helmet.
Chief Avant was the eighteenth Chief of the Department since 1871. |
